Leigh Cricket Club Home
2nd XI match
reports for
2001
| May 26 Flimwell
|
A
|
Flimwell were dismissed for 153, Phil Wynn-Owen taking 4 for 22. In response, Leigh were steered to victory by undefeated contributions of 50 from Martin Parfett and 48 from 14 years old Ed Kevis, reaching 157 for two after 34 overs. |
| June 2 Groombridge

|
Leigh were asked to bat and made a good start with Phil Wynn-Owen starring for the second week running (this time with the bat) making a beaconesque 48 and Kevin Watts, 26. However, the innings lost its way with only 18 runs coming off the last nine overs, so that a final score of 146 for nine was posted. There were some economical performances from the Groombridge bowlers and their response was steady against tight bowling, particularly from Gary Wood and Kevin Watts, 2 for 14 from six, but were steered to victory by an undefeated contribution of 45 from 16 years old T Bailey with three overs to spare on 148 for four. |
| June 9 Eynsford
|
A
|
After electing to bat, Leigh struggled against an accurate Eynsford attack. Phil Wynn-Owen top scored with 23, but Leigh finished on a meagre 101 for nine. In reply, Eynsford lost both openers cheaply before Colin Simmons amassed a rapid 30. However, at 68 for 5, Eynsford were looking down the barrel as Tugwell and Wynn-Owen both claimed two wickets. Their nerves were calmed by Dom Syres, who smashed an unbeaten 29 in 22 balls to win the game for Eynsford in the 22nd over on 106 for five wickets. |

June 16 Bidborough
|
H
|
Bidborough made slow progress against an efficient Leigh attack in which Tugwell conceded only 16 runs in his nine overs and Kevin Watts (he's back!!) claimed 3 for 33. Opener Steve Waller carried his bat for an eventual 71 as a final score of 175 for six was achieved. At this point rain arrived to bring a halt to proceedings. (Phil Wynn Owen was on holiday). |
| June 23 Pembury
|
A
|
Leigh batted first and were given an excellent start by openers Vic Clark, 65, and Clive Harding, 36, followed by 51 from Phil Wynn-Owen, back from a refreshing holiday, that, together were largely responsible for reaching 190 for seven wickets. In reply, Pembury kept pace with the run-rate thanks to a fine innings of 82 by Gary Purdy, that helped to put Pembury in a strong position. Six runs were needed to win in the last over, but Vic took two wickets to give Leigh victory by 3 runs in an exciting close, Pembury all out for 187. |
| June 30
Sissinghurst

H
|
Leigh batted first on an excellent wicket, Gary Wood, 55, and Martin Parfett, 67, making the best of it. Later in the innings, Ben and Lee Harding, added unbeaten 31 and 16 runs in a final score of 225 for the loss of only four wickets. This served as a challenge to S Kelly, who posted an unbeaten 103, supported by 53 from Glen Pocock, that took the response to a winning 226 for four by the last ball of the penultimate over. |
| July 7
St Lawrence
|
A
|
Those 2nd XI chaps at St
Lawrence must have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast as, sadly
for all concerned, they cancelled due to a lack of available
players. Generous to a fault, skipper Clive Harding gave his valiant
men a day orf to watch the test match and Wimbledon.
|
| July 14 Hadlow
|
H
|
Leigh batted first in a match reduced to 35 overs per side and were dismissed for 136 off the last ball of the innings. Whilst the official (League) match report (and therefore the Courier) credited Phil Wynn-Owen with a beaconesque 64, this was in fact scored by Marvellous Martin Parfett (as we suspected - Ed.). Hadlow's response soon ran into trouble as Brian Dolding was thrown out from the deep (ooer - Ed.) and some good catching kept the pressure up. Duncan Ottaway returned to the fore taking 3 for 30 and Tugwell, 2 for 28 as the innings closed on 121 all out in a nervous finish. |
| July 21 Cranbrook
|
A
|
Leigh were asked to bat first and made 192 for five wickets, extras being top scorer with 39, followed by Lee Harding with 37 and Vic Clark, 31. Cranbrook were then dismissed for 80 in 26.2 overs, both Martin Parfett (featuring this week as a bowler) and Parker taking 3 for 18. |

Four Elms
|
A
|
Leigh chose to bat and started well through an opening stand of 122 between Vic Clark, 37 and Clive Harding, who went on to make an undefeated 122 (not 135 per the League report!), Martin Parfett adding 43 not out in a final score of 232 for two wickets. In reply, Four Elms were pegged back by Kevin Watts, 1 for 16 and Tugwell, 1 for 33, both in nine overs, while a youthful tail was reduced to a series of ducks by Parfett, 4 for 33 and Vic Clark, 3 for 33 in 7.5 overs, the innings closing on 172 all out with one over remaining. |
| Aug 18 Crockham
Hill

A
|
Well, what can one say. We
here at website HQ were flabbergasted. Incredibly, Leigh, having been
asked to bat, were bowled out in 13.3 overs for just 24 runs. The main
damage was wreaked by Pat Reynolds, who captured 6 wickets for six runs in
6.3 overs, as Leigh's young batsmen received an education in swing bowling
(or rather not! Ed). Regular captain Clive Harding, the hero just two
weeks ago, was at the races. So were the rest of the team by the
sound of things. Extras top scored with 15, we understand.
Despite a lively spell from Tom McNab, Crockham Hill achieved victory
without loss in 7.2 overs, thus also beating the rain in dramatic fashion.

| Aug 25 Outwood
|
H
|
Outwood elected to bat and
got away to a flying start on a good batting track on the Green. 2nd
XI star all-rounder Phil Wynn-Owen, 3 for 27 and Tugwell, 3 for 59, both
in nine overs, claimed wickets on a regular basis, but, equally, Outwood's
batsmen accumulated runs. A seventh wicket stand eventually took the
innings to a respectable 238 for seven . Leigh struggled early on against
the bowling attack and suffered a middle order collapse. In the
face of this, only a fine unbeaten 66 from Wynn-Owen saved Leigh's blushes
as they ended on 149 for seven.

| Sept 1
Limpsfield Chart
|
A
|
Limpsfield Chart were invited to bat on a green track, and were soon in trouble against some very good bowling, particularly from Tom McNab, who bowled an excellent spell of left-arm over the wicket inswingers, deserving his return of four for ten in nine overs. There was also success for Phil Wynn-Owen, 3 for 23 from nine and Marvellous Martin Parfett, 2 for 22 against the tail. Chart were dismissed for 77 in the 32nd over. In reply, Leigh were made to work hard through some keen fielding and bowling by Chart, taking 33 overs to reach the safety of 78 for 5 wickets. Vic Clark made 19, Wynn-Owen, 14 and Sandy Keilloh, 15, but it was Parfett who was able to steer Leigh home in making an unbeaten 21. |
