Last year there were some surprises when we looked at who our star all-rounders were.  So we thought we'd do the same this year.  This time around, the field was a little limited: Linstead and Gordine barely bowling, Walshe only scoring 151 runs all season, Wynn Owen continuing to improve as a 2nd XI batsman but neglecting his bowling... etc. etc.

To make the award more than just academically interesting, we decided to scour the averages for those players ONLY who had scored 300+ runs AND taken 15 of more wickets.  Nine batsmen scored more than 300 and ten bowlers took 15 wickets, so that seemed a fair contest. The All-Rounder Rating is then a numerical value calculated by dividing his batting average by his bowling average. simple really.

Sadly, it became just a three-way contest with only three players achieving both hurdles.  Before we show you the result, a mention for our young rising star batsman, Ian Bishop, who failed to qualify as he only took 13 wickets with the ball.  Interestingly (or not) his batting average and bowling average were identical at 48.0 so his all-rounder rating was exactly 1.  That would not have been enough to win the award, however.  In fact, not even second (need to cut out those long hops Bishie-boy!).  Also interesting is Dave Walshe.  Walshie, a hard-hitting middle order batsman, took an excellent 32 wickets at just 17.2 so you'd think he'd be in with a shout. Sadly he only scored 151 runs at just 18.9. so whilst he scores a small positive integer, again it is piffling.

Our top All-Rounder, by a long way, and surely Leigh's Player-of-the-Year 2002 is Garry Wood with an amazing All-Rounder Rating of 4.0. A big well done from all at Website Towers. Martin Parfett came in second with Luke Grayland at third, although with a rating below 1, that is not quite all-rounder standard.  Keep trying, Lukey-boy, another couple of years maybe?
