www.leighcc.co.uk  All-Rounder  Awards for 2005

To remind you, again, of previous awards:

In 2002, the award was comfortably taken by Garry Wood with an all-round rating of 4.0 (that is a batting average of four times his bowling average).

In 2003, it was David Wells who not only stormed away with the batting cup with a top class batting average of 43, but also collected 16 wickets at 20.7 giving him an all-rounder rating of 2.1.

In 2004, we changed the qualifications to re-set the cut-offs at 200 runs and 12 wickets.  Garry Wood took the award for a second time with a rating of 1.73, with Luke Grayland (1.61) close behind.

Here are the awards for 2005:~

This year's surprise package was 2nd XI star player, "Marvellous" Martin Parfett with a batting average of 34.6 and a bowling average (18 wickets at a very tidy) 15.6.  This gives him an all-rounder rating of 2.21 which is reinforced by his superlative fielding which put most of the younger 2nd XI players and all the older ones to shame; this is also the second best all-rounder rating we have seen. Marvellous.  Incidentally, putting some of the regular bowlers to shame is Dazzler Darren Flint with his 15 wickets at 24.7 in the 1st XI giving him second place with 1.68 which would have nearly won the award in 2004.  Great to see Dave Doughnut Hollands in third place with 27 wickets at 23.2 to go with a greatly improved 37.76 batting average.

None of 2004's top four featured in 2005, however*, which suggests that we need a longer-range measure.  2006 season will be the fifth season of the award, so we will devise a weighted PWC-rankings type measure to factor in past performance as well as the current season. What ho!

  * Garry Wood took 11 wickets with a rating of 1.62, which is pretty respectable
