Averages for 2002

Despite a glorious season culminating in his being our leading run-scorer in the League, Garry Wood was pipped to the Batting cup by the First XI skipper and our rising star, Ian Bishop who made the no.3 slot his own this year. In addition to Garry and Ian Linstead posting averages in excess of 60, several batsmen featured with averages in the 30's and 40's and it is good to see Luke Grayland squeeze in to the Top Ten thanks to his Sunday performances, in particular a late-season 73*.

In all, 8 centuries were scored in 2002, four by the prolific Mr Wood Sr, three by Ian Linstead.

The season's record partnership was the father-and-son combination of Garry and Marc Wood who put on 259 unbeaten for the first wicket in our 259-0 against Limpsfield Chart (2nd XI, Sat. 31 Aug 02).  Unsurprisingly, Garry won the 2nd XI Man-of-the-Match (season?) award.

He might be Mr No.10 (in both the batting and bowling averages) but Luke Grayland does bowl good wicket- taking balls (must've been that secret off-cutter you developed this year, Luke!) ~ For the second season running, Luke took the Bowling Cup with 35 wickets but with a closer rival this time, Dave Walshe who made up for scoring fewer runs with the bat by taking an excellent 32 wickets.

It is good to see slow bowlers topping the averages this year, with Daves Walshe and Maslin and Garry Wood taking 73 wickets between them at a combined average of around 16.  Well outside the top rankings this year were several first X1 bowlers who have featured near(er) the top before such as : Tom Chalenor (availability), Clive Gordine (injuries) and Ian Harris (availability and injuries) - just 24 wickets between the 3 of them this year and Ian Linstead not featuring at all.

Best bowling figures still awaited, but a commendation to Kevin Watts (2nd XI) and Dave Walshe (1st's) who each took 17 League wickets this year.  Also 24 wickets for David Hollands, mostly on Sundays.
