Averages for
2003
It's good to see newcomers making an impression, and in 2003 this was certainly the case as far as the batting cup was concerned: in his first season, David Wells scored a flotilla of fifties and amassed 1003 runs in total at 43.6, the only Leigh player over the thousand. 2002's winner, Ian Bishop was second with 989 at 30.0 and Ian Linstead third with 870 runs at 51.2. Darren Flint had a barren season by his standards with 679 runs at 42.2 and Le Grand Oiseau was nowhere really. The amazing phenomenon that is Vic Clark topped the averages thanks to 8 not outs in 10 innings, as tough to dislodge as ever, eh Vic?! Useful contributions from another player in his first season at Leigh, Steve Watson averaging over 47.
With the ball, Bishop and David Hollands shared the bowling cup with 33 wickets each, a fair haul although they had to work hard for their wickets in a hot dry summer, bowling 333 overs between them; another Saturday-Sunday regular and 2002 winner, Luke Grayland, took 29 to claim third place; Ian Harris fourth with 25, mainly on Sundays only. In terms of averages, there was little to choose between the top four wicket takers, but Harris shades it with his wickets costing 24.2 ahead of Donut's 25.9, Bishie's 28.8 and Luke's 31.1. Steve Watson proved his worth to the first XI with 18 wickets at an average-topping 13.9, and Dave Walshe was second in the averages with 21 wickets at 15.2.
The second XI Man of the Match award was taken by Philip Wynn Owen with a great all-round contribution of 22 wickets and 179 runs over the season.
