Averages for
2004
It's customary for this section to deal first with batting averages, then the bowling. Why is this? Fundamentally it's a batsman's game, with the winning team being the one which, one way or another scores the most runs. Yet it's often said that to win a game you must bowl the opposition out (well, not in the Kent County Village League, but there we are).
Anyway, this year it's the bowlers who get first crack. Not that the bowlers had such a great season: indeed missing Watson (2003: 8 wickets at an average-topping 13.9), and Walshe (2003: second in the averages with 21 wickets at 15.2), the club would always be struggling. Often in such situations, someone new steps forward, or a previously-promising junior gets to show what he can do. Well this year there were useful performances from Duncan Ottaway (8 wkts at 18.9) and Will Martin (16 at 25.8); Tim Hamilton, a newcomer in 2004, played around 10 games and collected 8 leg-spin wickets at 29.4; last year's joint winner David Hollands, maybe under-bowled (?) just 6 at 14.3; in the 2nd XI Simon Southworth picked up 14 at 22.6; whilst the award for most impressive newcomer must go to Alex Wells with his 12 wickets. Otherwise, it was the usual, and older, suspects picking up bunnies with Ian Harris (32 at 12.0, mainly in the 2nd XI) and Kenny Ramsammy (24 at 20.0, mainly in the 1st XI, well done old chap!) picking up the top two places. In fact, Calypso Ken deserves a special work-horse prize for bowling more overs than anyone in the whole club. Luke Grayland (3rd with 23 at 18.9) and last year's other joint winner Ian Bishop (21 at 38.6) should be picking up more wickets really? Anyway, bowling cup goes to Chopper for the first time; in an interview with the web-master, he mentioned that this is the third club from whom he's collected this award over the years. How interesting.
So to the batsmen: We reported last year that it's good to see newcomers making an impression, and whilst 2003 winner David Wells scored a further 852 runs at 38.7, this year two players got over the thousand: 2002's winner, Ian Bishop was again second with 1097 at 33.3 but top prize goes to last year's third place: Ian Linstead with a massive 1,297 runs at 68.2. So what with Darren Flint again fourth, improving his run tally a shade with 702 at 33.4, there was little change at the top of the aggregates other than the first and third swapping places. Last year, the amazing phenomenon that is Vic Clark topped the averages; this year he barely featured averaging less than 9. As to honourable mentions: Luke Grayland emerged as a useful, Flintoff-type middle order, averaging 30 this year; Marc and Garry Wood scored over a thousand between them, averaging 32 (Garry) and 44 (Marc).
The highly coveted second XI Man of the Match award was shared between Garry Wood and Martin Parfett (3 nominations each).
Here are the averages with a big well done and thank you to Danielle for wielding the laptop for the 2nd or 3rd season now!:
