Leigh CC Junior Cricket Section  Review of 2002 Season    Home

Club secretary John Knock writes: The Jr U15 and U14 XIs played 13, won 1, lost 10 and had two games abandoned due to rain.  After losing six of last year's juniors, now over the age limit, the side had to rebuild but results should improve next year. We lost to Bidborough in the David Stevens Shield and to a very strong Penshurst Park XI in the "test match", but our win against Four Elms at home was most exciting with our opponents unable to get a single to draw (or two to win) from the last ball.  Frankie Baker led the side with enthusiasm, scored 59 not out against Four ELms at home and led the batting with 152 runs.  Freddie Scott hit 41 in the away match at Four Elms.  Will Martin and Ed Cattley led the bowling with 8 wickets each, with Jamie McCarthy on 6. In all, 16 boys and one girl played, including two at Leigh Primary School.

One extra U12 match, with an Incrediball, was played on Leigh Green against a Hildenborough XI captained by Matthew Watts and including his cousins Benjamin and Samuel, all Colin's and Janet's grandsons, who won a close game amidst much excitement [see Kwik Cricket review].

Our thanks again to Vic Clark for his dedicated coaching and umpiring, also to Brian Ball for assistance with umpiring, to parents for help with transport and "test match" refreshments, and to Ray Grayland for preparing wickets.  I again scored, arranged the fixtures and selected teams.

Junior Cricket Captain, Frank Baker writes: This was a season of mixed emotions for Leigh Juniors with the twelve matches played: Just the one victory but a memorable one for sure; two boys making their first ever 50's in cricket - hopefully the first of many for both. I won the toss and elected to bat first and made 59 not out. Leigh went on to make their best score of the season of 119-4. The other boy to make 50 was for Four Elms, out in the last over. By this time, Four Elms were 118-9, then the pressure was on, Ed Allward bowling the last over needing just a single run from it, but then bowled the last wicket and Four Elms were all out for 118 and Leigh won by just one run.  Also this season Freddy Scott made a good 41 then sadly got out.

The leading wicket taker was Will Martin followed by Jamie McCarthy and I was the leading run scorer, with 152 runs.
